== Weapons Point Changes == by John Eure * Rationale * One of the things people didn't like about the 2001 rules changes was the increase in cost for certain categories of weapons. Since reducing the costs would be fairly simple, and would make a lot of people feel better, I think making changes would be a good idea. However, the costs were changed for a reason, and so we should come to some sort of compromise. We can do that by putting certain weapons at costs that aren't multiples of 3. (We'd also need to include a guideline, to attempt to keep the weapons table from becoming more and more fine-grained.) When it comes to the specific details, I'm pretty sure that putting Long Florentine at 5 points would be the right thing to do - florentining with a plain sword is clearly better than florentining with a short sword or using a small shield, but it's not quite as good as using a medium shield. I'm not really sure that 2 points is the right place for 20" cored weapons, but it's 2/3rds the price of a short sword, and 20" is about 2/3s of 28", so there's some actual basis for it. Feel free to make counter-suggestions. I'm also including a proposal to put Throw Weapon back at 4 points. Although no one's complained about it recently, I remember that Sam Gailey, for one, didn't like it being reduced in cost. And as long as we're in the business of making these changes, we might as well do a full sweep. Throw Weapon is certainly better than crossbows, which also cost 3 points. * The proposals * Weapons 1) Long Florentine from 6 to 5 -- Reduce the cost of Long Florentine from 6 to 5 points. -- Adopt the following guideline: "Weapons costs: Weapons costs should be kept to multiples of 3 when possible, although it's all right to have a few exceptions on the fringes. However, all of the primary weapons costs (edged weapons above 3 points, shields, and armor) should be a multiple of 3 points, as they provide the baseline against which other weapons will be measured." Weapons 2) Cored 20" edged weapons from 3 to 2 -- Add an entry in the edged weapons section: Cored Dagger (to 20") 2 points -- Adopt the following guideline: "Weapons costs: Weapons costs should be kept to multiples of 3 when possible, although it's all right to have a few exceptions on the fringes. However, all of the primary weapons costs (edged weapons above 3 points, shields, and armor) should be a multiple of 3 points, as they provide the baseline against which other weapons will be measured." Weapons 3) Throw Weapon from 3 to 4 -- Increase the cost of Throw Weapon from 3 to 4 points. -- Adopt the following guideline: "Weapons costs: Weapons costs should be kept to multiples of 3 when possible, although it's all right to have a few exceptions on the fringes. However, all of the primary weapons costs (edged weapons above 3 points, shields, and armor) should be a multiple of 3 points, as they provide the baseline against which other weapons will be measured."
